The Importance of Early Puppy Socialization

Socialization is the most important thing for puppies, vets will tell you to wait and socialize you pup when all his shots are done. However, the truth is by that time you have missed a critical developmental window that you can never get back. My feelings that are also backed up by professionals is to socialize your puppy the day he comes home, just make sure you dont take him to places like dog parks were there are many dogs and sicknesses can be spread. Also, dont let your puppy around feces from other dogs. Another important point to keep your puppy safe is not to over do it, stop before you puppy is tired or gets stressed because when the body is tired or stressed its more ssusceptible to contracting a sickness. But also we aware that even with these precautions there is still a chance you puppy can get sick, and even grounding them in the house till his shots are complete does not insure 100% that your puppy will not get sick.

You will want to socialize your pup to many different environments, flooring, people of all shapes and sizes, also people with canes, umbrellas and in wheelchairs, the possibilities are endless. Bring along you pups favourite toy and or treats so he is rewarded when he is calm and unafraid of the surroundings. If you puppy is scared of something walk a couple feet away and let him recover then play a game with him and slowly get closer giving him treats for being brave, you can also lower the intensity so he isnt overwhelmed if he is really having a hard time.

This will all contribute to happy well-adjusted adult dog, it helps to take your puppy to many places with you, if your going to mail a letter take you pup, he gets experience in the car and when you let him out for a potty break there is a new opportunity for socialization.

If you do dog sports is beneficial to take you pup to these events or practices so they can get used to the sights and sounds, just make sure to keep these outings short and upbeat and leave with your dog wanting more!
