Detailed Description of Dog
Meet "Hollywood Handsome" Pete, a neutered 3 year old purebred GSD on limited AKC registration. Pete is well mannered and mellow in the house, but active outside and needs plenty of exercise or free running to stay trim. He walks well on a Gentle Leader, can perform a variety of commands, and has a strong drive to please his master. He is exceptionally loyal and will make an excellent companion. Pete demonstrates the traditional protective instincts of the GSD breed, and he needs to spend time with his people. He learns quickly and is eager to train.
The ideal home for Pete would have a large fenced area, as Pete should not be left off leash near other unfenced animals. Pete would do fabulously on a large property, or possibly on a small farm, ranch, or homestead. The owners must be experienced with this or similar breeds, and must use humane handling techniques. Pete needs an active and firm leader, who will give him a job to do. He is excellent at patrolling, chasing animals off the property, and participating in family activities. He does well with children who are old enough to assert themselves and reinforce boundaries--he does not jump, but because of his size may not be suitable for very young children. Pete loves people, and can be social, but is not overly pushy. He is trained to Go Settle when he gets overly excited or in busy situations. He does well outdoors, but is well trained and calm indoors.
While Pete exhibits no aggression to humans, he is in training for reactivity for other dogs. He is learning to pass other contained dogs without showing high levels of aggression. However, he will show aggression to dogs that approach him or when he is not contained. Pete is not suitable for homes with other dogs, or homes where he will not be well contained. This is Pete's only flaw, and it is highly manageable for the responsible, prepared owner.
If you think Pete is the right dog for your family, please call. Pete's adoption is managed by Blue Sky Canine's Maya Project. There is no rehoming fee, but interviews and home checks will be conducted prior to Pete being adopted.
