Meet Daisy!

Daisy is a 4 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. She has been with us since March and has excelled in so many ways! Daisy is great with kids, cats, and dogs.  She does get overly excited when she see's other dogs because she wants so much to meet them and she gets frustrated being restrained; so Daisy just needs more work on healing. She has learned to heal very well on-lead, (no strange dogs for distractions though), even better off-leash, and she has excellent recall as well. Daisy would be a great partner for combing the river bed for rocks on a hike and she loves doggy back packs!

*Update* Daisy's been with us for over a year now, just waiting for the perfect home! She's a great (about 65 lbs) watch dog! She sits in the window and lets us know someone or something is there. If you want a companion and to feel safe in your home, she's your girl!  She's got the most beautiful stance/figure. Daisy looks intimidating but is really a big lover who likes to lick, lick, lick your hand with affectionate exuberance!  Out on a walk, I have to be in total control and be very firm on her healing. I use a Gentle Leader, but she doesn't respect me if I'm gentle. She only sees me as leading the walk if I lift and hold firm until she sits and looks at me on her own and acknowledges me as alpha. Then she relaxes more and trusts me on OUR walk. Daisy is much happier this way and can enjoy our outing. I still avoid places with other dogs, so we can just relax. I still have to pass dogs behind fences but she's done much better at ignoring them if she's accepted me as the leader first. I make her sit and relax while the owner/s of the barking dogs in their fenced yard settle them then she sees there is no threat and we move on. Loose dogs running up to her is not a good idea!  I have had her off-leash at the river but ONLY if there are no dogs in sight. Daisy does well with her recall, especially if you have a pocket full of beef jerky! She'll heal and stay by your side until you give her the "okay". Then she looks at you twice as if to say, "really, do you mean it?" I tried lure/reward training with her on walks for 5 months, to no avail, she is not treat motivated if she's anxious, once she relaxes and sees I will take care of her, she will accept treats happily. She had to survive on the streets and provide for her pup (Polar, who was adopted through ADPR) so she's in survival mode outside. Daisy needs a strong but patient and loving handler who appreciates her strength.  She has so many good qualities! She's a hand nudger big time when you are trying to use your mouse while on the computer. Daisy is easy-going inside, loves to cuddle, wrestle, although a little rough/too strong for little ones, but she's still good with kids of all ages. She gets along with ALL my dogs now.  She's done well with a couple dogs that came to visit in my home, but not all. She does like to test other dogs to see where she stands. She can be relentless like this and if the other dog reacts, she reacts. Daisy would do best in a home with an easy-going subordinate male, like my Buddy. They get along great!
